Guest post: Kimmi’s birthday photo booth

Please put your hands together and welcome Kimmi. Kimmi is my ultra, ultra, bestest friend of eight years. She is quite possibly the coolest, most laid-back, happy-go-lucky chicky I know. Last month Kimmi celebrated her 30th birthday in her home town of Cairns. I had the pleasure of sharing the weekend with her and her lovely husband, Sean, in their stunning, rainforest-surrounded house. Kimmi created all her own decorations for the party, including folding 98 paper cranes! I ‘helped’ put the last touches on the photo booth the day I arrived (aka I stood around drinking heaps of wine, trying on the crazy costumes and taking photos while Kimmi finished the photo booth). The booth was a huge hit with all the party-goers and captured so many great memories from the weekend.

I’m blessed to have a bunch of wonderfully inspiring girlfriends who have been my ultimate travel buddies for years. For a good while there we’d pack up every year, say goodbye to the partners in our lives and trot off to some far-flung place for a week or five. It was our way of staying connected despite the distance that came with living in cities scattered across Australia. Sadly, the trips are now becoming few and far between as many of us start settling down and doing incredibly adult things like buying houses, which really eats into the travel budget.

Allow me to introduce you to Vanessa. I first met Vanessa almost 4 years ago when I interviewed her for a position in my team. She got the job, obviously. We agree on a lot of stuff particularly our love for animals. Just recently Vanessa became vegetarian and so, pretty much every week, we have fun emailing each other new recipes and cute animal pictures. When she told me she was going to hand-make all her Christmas decorations I pestered her every day to write a guest post for us until I think she got sick of me and agreed to do it just to shut me up. Thanks Vanessa!

Crafting is rad, right? And hanging with girlfriends also has a high rad factor. Put the two together and welcome to the wonderful world of rad squared. Or shared crafternooning.
Clever little cookie Jess dreamed up this concept for her group of friends in Brisbane and kindly invited Alana and I along to the first event last Sunday.

When people think of wishing trees they naturally think of weddings. Last year however, as I held a party to celebrate my 30th birthday, I began thinking about how I could make my party the most eco-friendly it could be (you can read more about this in my post here). In between questioning the eco-friendliness of decorations, food and invitations I realised just how much waste comes from giving presents – think wrapping paper, ribbons, cards, envelopes – and then being vegan adds a whole other degree of difficulty – plus I have pretty much everything I need.

Here’s a lovely little tale to warm your heart this Valentine’s Day. My forever bubbly and energetic friend Emily and her midwifery offsiders found themselves with some time to kill as they worked the late shift in a Queensland hospital maternity ward last night. Aware that some of the hospitalised mums were doing it tough, and that some of their colleagues were feeling the pressure, they put their kind, creative souls to work and made small tokens of love and cheer to hand around and brighten the place up. It sounds like they had pretty good fun along the way, too.
