The spotty dress makeover

I just love finding old dresses in second-hand stores and giving them a new lease on life with a little trimming and sewing. Most of my makeovers involve the barest of changes, maybe just a hemline lift or sleeve removal that can be completed in a matter of minutes. But recently I ventured into a more daring attempt with this 1980s spotty number found for $30 at Brisbane’s wonderful Endeavour Foundation thrift shop. Of course, I wanted to share it with you. And now seems like the perfect time as unfortunately I’m still down and out with a severe back injury. The pair have run their You, Us and a Bus tours for almost five years now and its clear they’ve nutted out Adelaide’s best thrift stores and are only too happy to show newcomers the way.

Op shops are always packed full of skirts and with a little bit of digging – or by heading to an upmarket vintage or antique store where the digging has already been done for you – you can easily stack your wardrobe with one-of-a-kinds.
It’s even better if you have a sewing machine and the basic skills needed to sew a hem as many skirts score a wonderful new lease on life if you scoot the hemline up a little.
So, without further ado, here’s a collection of my most cherished thrifted skirts as the latest in my fave vintage things series.
