Girl’s day out

Recently I stumbled across some old journals from 2008 in which I had written down my five year goals. Surprised was I to find that I have achieved all but one of those goals – get my nose pierced. I mentioned this to my adorable friend Em and it was decided it was well and truly time for a girl’s day out, complete with nose bling.

Tipped off by the Mother Down Under, this last Saturday just passed, I took a stroll to our newest neighbourhood café, Botanica. The café is nestled away in a tiny little spot on the corner of Musgrave Road and Enoggera Terrace, right next to the Cockadoodle café (you should try their coffee too it’s amazing!).

Watched over by gentle giant eyes of Buddha, new and old friends mustered together to laugh away the hectic week, share stories, eat and drink. Welcoming Jess, the newest resident in the little house with the green walls, we placed ourselves in the front window of the Tibetan Kitchen, Spring Hill.

Lucy Brook has kindly compiled a sharp list of six River City restaurants that she reckons are top-notch for herbivores. It’s well worth checking out.
Some of my faves have made the list, like New Farm’s colourful Himalayan Cafe, which has traditional momos so good I find myself transported directly back to the Nepal we visited a couple years ago, to a little cafe perched on a rooftop high above Kathmandu’s smog-choked streets. They also do a little number we’ve dubbed “cloud bread” – so much so I don’t actually know it’s real name! Hunt for the mint sauce and you’ll be in cloud bready heaven.

Just a few weeks ago I believed Bali was all cheap beers and loud bogans – the latter largely Australian. I’m chuffed to learn I was sorely mistaken. After two weeks holidaying here on the Indonesian island my view has drastically changed. It’s one of the best places to relax and unwind, aided by beautifully cheerful people and strikingly vivid landscapes in an environment that is fast-paced yet laid-back.
And then there’s the food.
